GARDEN PROGRAMS

Identify and manage the winter landscape this year with Hermitage Curator of Gardens and Grounds Philip Riske.

Winter Splendor and Backyard Confusion:
Identify Native Plants, Exotic Invasives, and Other Garden Curiosities
Wednesday, February 7, 9am—Noon

With a focus on native woody plants found on the grounds of the Hermitage Museum, we will provide useful tips for knowing what plant you’re looking at based on bark, buds, and remnant fruiting structures. Exotic invasive plants will be covered as well as those regarded as benign non-native species. When possible, perennial flowering plants with identifiable parts still standing will not be overlooked. Included will be history, lore, and the wildlife benefits of many of our native flora. 1 hour inside, 2 hours outside

Reign them in: Pruning Trees and Shrubs for Renewal, Rejuvenation and Structure in the Landscape
Wednesday, February 14, 9am–Noon

With proper pruning, trees live longer, shrubs are lush, not leggy, and flowering plants bloom more reliably.  Arm yourself with sound pruning principles for young and newly planted trees as well as old overgrown shrubs that feel beyond your control.  In this course, you will receive hands on teaching and experience. Our Curator of Gardens and Grounds has over twenty years’ experience pruning a diverse collection of trees and shrubs.
1 hour inside, 2 hours outside
