Classes are open to ages 14 and up unless otherwise noted.

Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. Please register as early as possible to help us confirm classes.

Class fees include: tuition, studio fees, and most supplies. Tuition helps us pay our instructors, studio fees cover wear and tear on the facility and its equipment, and supply fees cover the cost of supplies specific to the class or workshop. In some classes, students may be asked to purchase or bring in additional materials for personal use. Class and Workshop Refund Policy:
The Hermitage will issue a refund if the cancelation request is made within one week of the class starting minus a processing fee. The Hermitage will not issue refunds or transfers after the class has started. Please make selections carefully and mark your calendar.

POTTERY:
INTRO TO WHEEL-THROWING

Beginner and intermediate potters will learn the basics of throwing forms on the potter’s wheel. Enjoy wheel-throwing functional forms such as bowls, cups, plates, jars, and mugs. Experiment with glazing techniques and bring home beautiful hand-made pieces.

Beginner and intermediate potters will learn basic wheel-throwing and hand-building skills to create functional forms. Begin by learning hand-building techniques such as coil and slab building then move on to creating forms such as bowls, cups, and mugs on the potters wheel. Learn about glazing techniques and bring home functional pottery.

INTERMEDIATE WHEEL-THROWING

8 weeks, April 13-June 1

Intermediate potters will review and enhance fundamental wheel-throwing, wedging, and composition skills to create functional forms: bowl, plate, lidded forms, and vase and other variations including sculpture – to connect and refine one’s understanding on what-it-is & how-to-do. This class will also introduce Two-finger throwing techniques common in the texture-oriented Korean and Japanese ceramic compositions. Additional topics in art history and composition will be discussed as time permits. Previous wheel-throwing experience is required; exceptional skills are not. Each class will consist of weekly discussions on key topics with a demonstration, followed by practice in the remainder of the class.

LARGE-SCALE COIL POTS

Coil building is one of the very first hand-building techniques used to create pottery. This workshop will teach proper coil building to create large scale vessels and offer effective techniques for designing large pots with structural strength. This workshop is for beginner and intermediate level students.

CLAY GAMES: TIC TAC TOE

Get your game on! From sketching to creating, students will hand-build their own tic-tac-toe board and pawns from clay. Learn the fundamentals of clay while creating a classic game that brings people of all ages together. This is a great class for kids and adults to take together! All ages and skill levels welcome. CERAMICS OPEN STUDIO

Open Studio provides individuals 16+ the opportunity to create their own projects or to improve their skills. Time in the studio is monitored but not instructional and allows for use of specialized tools and studio equipment in ceramics. Learn more about Open Studio + apply here

THE IMAGINATIVE SELF: PAINTING, DRAWING, AND MORE

Enjoy a class of artistic freedom using your imagination and intuition. This is an exploratory class that consists of varying exercises to help you find new avenues of expression. This multi-media class will have you painting to music, introduce monoprints, and blind contour drawing. Students will use acrylic and oil paints, chalk pastels, and more. If you have an interest in art and being creative but have never taken the first step, this is a great class for you. No experience is needed. Bring an open mind to this non-intimidating class and dare to imagine! Supply list provided at the first class session.

INTRODUCTION & INTERMEDIATE PAINTING

Explore oil and acrylic painting during this 8-week class. This class will guide participants through the painting process, from color mixing and blending, to application, and brushwork. Students will gain an enhanced understanding of composition and perspective. Choose which painting medium is best for you and learn how acrylic and oil can be used together. Develop your own personal approach to drawing and painting as you examine different styles from both classical and contemporary artists. Students will paint still lifes and create a Master Copy from a famous artist. Class supply list provided.

INTRODUCTION TO WATERCOLOR PAINTING

Learn new techniques for capturing texture in your drawings during this 2-day intensive class. Get a brief introduction to drawing various objects, each with a different surface quality. Gain an understanding of the value scale through the use of graphite and charcoal while sharpening your observation skills.

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Learn how to make the most of your digital camera and create better photographs by taking control of image creation. This class presents a solid foundation of DSLR camera use through in-class demonstrations and lectures as well as hands-on classwork and assignments. Lectures and assignments cover shooting in manual modes, image storage capabilities, file types, various camera menus, exposure, light, shutter effects, and the resulting creative possibilities. A digital SLR camera is preferable but any camera with manual capabilities will work for this class. No previous camera knowledge or experience is required.
Photo editing skills will not be covered in this class. Please bring the printed manual that came with your camera to the first class. The book Understanding Exposure, 4th Edition: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera by Bryan Peterson is required.

CREATIVITY FOR MENTAL HEALTH

Using a variety of art-making materials, this class will focus on the positive psychological, emotional, and social aspects of creativity. Through creative arts, students will enhance social connections and reaffirm that all humans have the capacity for creativity. Students will learn how to approach different art mediums in a new way each week. Discussions will focus on ways that creativity can help improve mental health and how to destigmatize and rehumanize art and creativity. Local artisan and designer Kristine Kennedy is going to teach you how to create with resin. While the focus will be on jewelry making, the process is applicable across other art forms and disciplines. Learn the skills you need to craft your own pieces fearlessly at home.

HAMMERED: INTRODUCTION TO METALS

It’s amazing what you can create with some copper wire, a hammer, and some patience. Learn the basics of metal working with copper. In this class you will learn to make all of the components that you need to assemble a finished piece of jewelry, including jump rings, earwires, clasps, and connectors. In addition to hammering, you will learn filing, texturing, stamping and patina work for copper. Come out of the class with a beautiful pair of earrings that you created.

HANGING SUCCULENT ARRANGEMENT

Kokedama or “moss ball” is a traditional garden art that utilizing moss and string to create a hanging ball of plants, instead of growing the plant on the ground. This unconventional garden form will add a unique style to your living space and is a great introduction to caring for succulents. Students will have plenty of exotic homegrown species to choose from plus learn how to maintain and care for your living creation. Take home care cards are provided as well as all supplies and step by step hands on guidance on how to create this living, hanging arrangement.
