Your support will help us reach the final step of this project—creating a permanent, state of the art facility, and the newest chapter in the Hermitage’s ever-evolving history.
Florence Sloane believed that museums should be living, active centers, where all people come together. We strive to fulfill this definition of a museum, and this project will ensure that arts and educational opportunities are available and accessible to all members of our community.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Endorsed by the Board of Directors in November 2021, this is a rapid campaign designed to address the urgent need for renovations of our Visual Arts School (VAS) with a goal of $3.5 million.
The Visual Arts School has been in operation since 1937; the complete renovation will maintain the historic integrity of the building, while nearly doubling student capacity by redefining the second floor into classroom and collaborative workspaces. In addition to welcoming more students, the VAS will host new programming, events, and have multipurpose space for community use. The grounds will be enhanced with native grasses and plants, and permeable parking and walkways along a living shoreline. The restoration of the structure and its grounds are designed to function and withstand high tides and rising waters from storms; it will be a water resilient campus.
