ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

Human impact on the environment has become a common, and controversial, dialogue. In coastal Virginia, topics such as climate change, sea level rise, and water pollution are addressed regularly. These issues are particularly critical for the city of Norfolk which is ground-zero for sea level rise. The state of Virginia was awarded more than $120 million dollars from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to address sea-level rise and flooding, with Norfolk receiving the biggest chunk. It’s estimated that much of the city will be under water by 2100, including the Hermitage Museum & Gardens. Pollution also greatly affects coastal Virginia waterways. Efforts to restore oyster populations and wetlands as a way to clean up the Chesapeake Bay watershed are always underway in the region. Part of the Hermitage Museum’s mission is to preserve the distinct beauty of the natural environment. The museum has a vested interest in tackling the topic of the environment, both in its conservation efforts and in its exhibitions.
